We would like to welcome you to Colorado Springs and help you plan your visit and interview. Most important is to please beware of the change in altitude. You are coming to the home of the US Olympic Training Center. Some say there is a reason Colorado Springs was selected: rumor has it training at high altitude makes for more fit athletes at other elevations.
Home to approximately 375,000 people, Colorado Springs officially sits at 6,035 feet high and is based at the foot of Pikes Peak. The residents enjoy views of the Rocky Mountains and Garden of the Gods, the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) or Cheyenne Mountain from nearly every neighborhood in the city. It’s a place where the sun shines 300 out of 365 days a year.
Locals call our town “The Springs” and neighboring Manitou Springs is better known as “Manitou.” Once you figure out that “Cache La Poudre” and “Bijou” are streets through downtown and “Oro Blanco” and “Mesa” also appear on the map, you begin to see the blend of cultures that built the city and you accept that you’ll never understand why Fillmore Street becomes Circle Drive at the Union Boulevard intersection. Step away from downtown and Old Colorado City and it’s rare to find square blocks; most roads curve and can meet up at different locations. A GPS navigation system is handy during your first visit.
While you’re here you may notice our Air Force and Army service members. Colorado Springs is home to Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base, USAFA, Cheyenne Mountain and Fort Carson.
Denver is one hour north by car, linking Colorado Springs to extended shopping, theaters and museums. The high country is two-three hours west to north-west and from November into April offers skiers and snowboarders unparalleled runs while the spring and summer months offer mountain biking and hiking. Ten ski resorts are within 100 miles of Colorado Springs. The Arkansas River is one hour south and is home to the Royal Gorge and Canon City. Here you can find river guides for white-water rafting experiences of a lifetime.
